Mass Man Kills Himself On Interstate After Fatal Daytime Shooting In Worcester: Police

Massachusetts police are attempting to unravel the chaotic case of a man who is believed to have shot and killed someone in Worcester before he walked onto I-190, pointed his gun at terrified drivers, and then killed himself when officers had him cornered, authorities said.

It began around 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, when Worcester police were called to a home on Heroult Road to reports of a gunshot victim. They found a man bleeding from a serious wound.

Police gave him medical aid until paramedics arrived and rushed him to an area hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, authorities said.

The victim's name was not released.

As authorities investigated the scene, a State Trooper noticed a man in the area acting suspiciously, but when the officer approached the man, he pulled a gun, fired a shot, and ran away, authorities said.

About an hour later, officers received reports of a man stopping traffic on northbound I-190 near Exit 2. He was waving a gun and pointing it at terrified drivers, authorities said.

Editor's note: The initial report incorrectly stated the interstate where the shooting took place.

This was near the Heroult Road shooting scene.

When police confronted him, the man took off running down I-190 and attempted to carjack a driver at gunpoint, officers said.

A Worcester officer and State Trooper each fired a shot at the man because they believed he posed an imminent threat, Worcester police said in a news release. It's unclear if they hit him.

That's when police say he turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger.

Paramedics took him to an area hospital, where staff pronounced him dead. Police have not released the man's name.

Authorities believe he was responsible for the fatal shooting on Heroult Road, but it remains under investigation.

Authorities closed I-190 for hours as they cleaned, cleared, and investigated the scene.

Worcester detectives are investigating the chaotic incident and ask anyone with information to contact them at (508) 799-8651. They are especially interested in speaking with anyone with video of the I-190 shooting.
